MINISTERS' WELCOME
It has truly been a privilege to be a small part of the history of East Kilbride Old Parish Church. As ministers, we are always passing through congregations, but I have lingered here for quite a while now. I was ordained in 2001 when I became minister of this congregation and parish, and it really wasn’t my intention to stay so long. However, the strong sense of call I felt when I came here initially has never gone away, and I still very much feel that this is where God is continuing to call me.
Throughout my time here, I have been fortunate to be surrounded by such a capable and dedicated Kirk Session and congregation. Sometimes ministers are expected to be “jacks of all trades”, and I can honestly say that I am not, so having office bearers in whom I can put my trust has enabled me to use my God-given skills to build up our church life together.
The Church is perhaps the only organisation that exists, not for its members, but for those outside it. Our prominent position in the village’s heart has allowed us to properly serve our community over the years. It is a delight that so many local people, who may not join us regularly for worship, very much think of it as “their church”, due to the very warm welcome everyone receives from our congregation.
The Church of Scotland Moderator, Rt Rev Sally Foster-Fulton, has said of The Church “We stand on the shoulders of giants and dance on the dreams of those yet unborn.” In this special year, we give thanks for the giants who have gone before us, from whom we have inherited our beautiful church building. We also give thanks for those who will come after us as we entrust it into their safekeeping and allow them to dream their own dreams for their church.
Rev Anne Paton, BA. BD.
